Reporter, Tallahassee Democrat

Last May, I returned to the Tallahassee Democrat, a USA Today affiliate paper, as its education reporter. I conduct investigative and watchdog journalism.

During my first year with Democrat, I wrote articles covering crime-related breaking news, court cases, state legislation and local environmental issues.

My tasks and responsibilities include:

  • Integrating social media platforms to break the news and to improve interactions with reader.
  • Creating data-driven content solutions through daily audits of social channels and mining social media for trends, sources, and the best user-generated content to use in daily journalism.
  • Pitching story ideas to editors daily; researching stories, generating follow-ups on story leads, source and interview experts, academics, victims, and professionals for assignments; coordinating interviews, media opportunities, and logistics for photographers; and maintaining stories, deadlines, photos, captions, and headlines using content management systems, such as News Gate and Presto.

Social Media Manager, Nashville Philharmonic Orchestra

I recently played the violin in the Nashville Philharmonic Orchestra, a nonprofit organization that performs at various venues to bring high-quality symphonic music to underserved areas of the community. In addition to playing, I volunteered my time as NPO’s social media manger.

As a social media manager, I devised their social media strategy, which includes building a social media calendar, writing posts, and publishing promotions across several social media platforms. I also developed creative social media content with desktop publishing software.

Moreover, I consistently reviewed analytics to increase engagement level with users and community. For example, total reach for NPO’s Facebook page increased nearly 1,000% since integrating the current social media plan. This increase occurred using all organic content.

Public Affairs Representative, U.S. Army

One of my additional assignments while serving in the Army, was the role of Public Affairs Representative. My responsibilities included responding to queries from local and national media sources, developing and executing communication plans, and delivering news and information to military members.

I articulated military information for public dissemination, developed and executed communication plans, and directed specialized public affairs activities and liaisoned with government staffers. I advised senior leaders on public affairs issues, assisted them in making well-informed decisions, and translated the decisions into effective public affairs operations. I prepared executives and subject matter experts for interviews.

I wrote and edited guest columns featured on, which featured snapshots into deployed soldiers’ lives.
